PHY-121, Spring 2008 ASU catalog description: PHY 121 University Physics I - Mechanics. (3) fall, spring, summer. Kinematics; Newton's laws; work, energy, momentum, conservation laws; dynamics of particles, solids, and fluids. 3 hours lecture, 1 hour recitation. Prerequisite: MAT 270 or 290 or instructor approval. General Studies: SQ (if credit also earned in PHY 122) PHY-121 is a calculus-based introduction to the physics of mechanical motion. It provides a fundamental foundation for later courses in science and engineering. Both analytical problem-solving skills and conceptual understanding are important parts of the learning and testing in this course, making rote memorization a notably poor route to good grade. To do well, students must diligently attend classes, carefully read and study the text, thoroughly work the homework problems, and strive to truly master the material rather than attempting to merely scrape through on minimum effort. The field of physics invariably emphasizes the use of mathematics to describe and understand physical phenomenona. PHY-121 is no exception. It will be assumed that all students in this course are fully fluent in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. The
text to be used in this course is H.D. Young and R.A. Freedman, University Physics,
12th Edition, Pearson/Addison-Wesley, San Francisco, 2008.
Students should purchase the text in the package that also contains "Mastering Physics" supplemental material (Mastering Physics can
be purchased separately, but is a little less expensive when
purchased in the package). The class website for the Doak section of PHY-121 (Course ID #10494) will be on ASU Blackboard. Students registered for the course should find the course displayed automatically when they connect to the myASU portal (http://my.asu.edu). Homework in this course will be course will be assigned, submitted, and graded via the "Mastering Physics" online system (http://masteringphysics.com). A Mastering Physics access kit can be purchased with the text (above) or separately at the Mastering Physics website. CPS (Classroom Performance System, http://einstruction.com) will be employed for feedback, quizzes, and attendance in the lecture. Students should purchase a CPS "clicker" (available at the ASU bookstore) and register it on the Blackboard class website. Detailed information on all of the above topics can be found in the "Class Information" of the Blackboard website. |
