The John and Richard Jacob Award for Undergraduate Research

This award was established by Richard and Jacqueline Jacob in the names of their sons, John S. Jacob and Richard E. Jacob, who are both ASU and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences alumni. John earned his B.S. in physics in 1988, and Richard earned his B.S. in physics in 1997. They benefited significantly from their research experiences as undergraduates. Each received a department award as a senior, and each was elected to Sigma Pi Sigma. Jacqueline Jacob is also an ASU alumna, and Professor Emeritus Richard Jacob joined the Department of Physics in 1963 and served as its Chair 1985-1990.

An eligible applicant shall be a B.S. Physics or B.A.E. (Physics emphasis) student who is on track to graduate within nine months of the date of the award. Students must be nominated by faculty members from ASU’s Department of Physics or supervisors where the student has participated in an undergraduate research program and for whom the student has carried out a project of significant research in physics or astrophysics. Participation by the student in the research program shall have been on a formal basis, either through an established program, through registration for university research credit, or as a paid employee under the supervisor’s grant. The award recipient shall have contributed substantially to the results of the research and participated in their dissemination. The amount of this award is $200 and a one-year student membership in either the American Physical Society (APS) or the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT).
